In this episode of The Mixing Glass - Olivia Stewart talks about what it was like growing up on a single estate rum distillery and sugar cane farm in Lousiana. Olivia also discusses sugar cane manufacturing technique, sugar cane varietals, and we even get to taste some of these amazing spirits!
----------
Olivia Stewart is President of Oxbow Rum Distillery, which her family started in Baton Rouge in 2016. They have owned and operated their Louisiana cane farm and sugar mill for five generations, which provides all their raw ingredients for producing their estate rums. Growing up on the farm instilled a passion for all things sugarcane––and eventually rum. After pursuing an art dealing career in New York, Olivia moved back home in 2020 to help turn the distillery around during the height of the pandemic.
With the help of her husband as a distiller, they refined all processes and rebranded to Oxbow Rum Distillery in 2022. Their products have won multiple international awards, including Best White Rum at San Francisco International Spirits Competition. They ferment and distill every drop from either fresh-pressed cane juice or Grade A molasses, all sourced from the family estate 20 miles from the distillery. Olivia sees Oxbow Rum as an expression of the land and sugarcane that has been part of her family and the community for generations.
